Nida (Roman town)

Nida was an ancient roman town in the northwestern suburbs of today's Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It was at the time of the Roman empire capital of the Civitas Taunensium. The Roman town was on the edge of the Wetterau region in the northwest of the present city of Frankfurt am Main, in the district of Frankfurt-Heddernheim. The first traces of a temporary Roman settlement date to the reign of Emperor Vespasian in the years 69 to 79. Nida was finally evacuated in 259-260 in the face of invading Alamanni. The name of the settlement is known thanks to written sources from Roman times and probably derives from the name of the adjacent river Nidda.
